Meet our athlete of the Month, Miss Julie S.
Thank you Julie, for being a part of this community, for always making us laugh & always supporting our box 💚
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH US?
I have been with CrossFit ReStore since November 2014.
WHY DO YOU CROSSFIT?
I love overcoming my own self-doubt and becoming stronger as a byproduct.
I am constantly pushed beyond what I think I can do every time I step foot into the gym. Lifting weights was never something I was ever comfortable with or remotely good at. Doing these movements has built my confidence in so many levels.
I also like that I do this for myself. This is my “me” time. I am not a mom or a wife when I am working out. I am just me, trying to do the best I can to not die.
WHY DID YOU START?
I started doing CrossFit because I gained 60 lbs while I was pregnant with my son and I could not get rid of the last 40 lbs.
One day a friend on Facebook asked if anyone wanted to join a 10 week nutrition challenge. I immediately took her up on it. As part of the challenge; we were required to do physical activity three to five days a week. CrossFit was heavily encouraged because you burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time.
After the challenge was over, I had drank enough of the Kool-Aid to want to continue improving myself and stuck with it.
WHY DO YOU LIKE CROSSFIT RESTORE?
When I initially started CrossFit, I Groupon-hopped to see where I wanted to invest my time and money. I went to four other gyms in the area before landing at ReStore.
There was something different about ReStore that none of the other gyms had. Jason did not treat me as a number. I felt like he truly cared about my fitness goals and about me as a person.
The community is also the best. This community is competitive, but there is a comfort to the competitiveness level that we have with one another. We are here to push each other to make one another better, not to tear down each other down. I also love our girls Bunco nights and all the other events.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CF MOVEMENT?
I like to lift. Out of all the lifting movements, I like to dead lift the most. I am proud of that PR the most.
When I started out, Jason set a goal to get my dead lift to 200 lbs. I thought he was out of his mind. I am now at 225 lbs, but still think Jason is out of his mind. Ha!
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENT?
The gymnastic movements are not my friend. I really wish that I was more aerodynamic, but I am not. I am getting better, but there is a lot of room for improvement here.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY WITH CROSSFIT RESTORE?
I love our Open events. The energy is palpable and pushes me far beyond what I can do at a regular gym time. We also get to bring our family and friends, so they can come to watch and cheer on all the athletes competing.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
My biggest accomplishments are when I get a friend to join me in my love for CrossFit. I love this near-death experience so much, when someone else gets to experience that, I feel very fortunate to be able to share. I have friends who have joined ReStore and others who have joined gyms in their hometowns. It’s a great feeling!
WHAT ARE YOUR FITNESS GOALS TODAY?
My overall goal is to continue to improve myself, stay healthy and show up consistently.
However, to get specific, I would love to do a strict pull up (that kip wants to make an appearance every time); snatch over 85 lbs (there is a major mental block there); do 50 unbroken reps, of graceful and efficient, double unders; and go inverted for a handstand push up and not feel like I am going to break my neck.
